2023 Ambassador Committee, Ying Photography

April 21, 1976 - June 27, 2023

Catherine “Cat” Robin Pennenga

Legacy Ambassador

Cat Pennenga sadly passed away June 27, 2023 due to complications of Stage IV Lung Cancer. Cat was an incredibly kind human being, talented photographer, wife and dog mom. She had a distinct style that made her stand out in any room she entered. Her smile was huge, her heart was caring and as her friend Juliana said, “she is a golden hour, personified.”

Always on the top of her game in the photography industry, Cat shot some of our area's most gorgeous weddings for over 10 years with her company Cat Pennenga Photography. If her photography portfolio wasn't enough, she also owned The Fancy Booth and was a staple of weddings, nonprofit and corporate events. She loved connecting with people and documenting their lives.

Before opening her photography business, she worked in magazine editing and spent 12 years exploring the country before returning to settle in Sarasota.

Cat was loved by everyone that knew her. She was full of good energy and completely down to earth. The wind could be blowing down her photobooth repeatedly, and she would still find a way to laugh about it. 'She will truly be missed' is an understatement. Cat loved Mexican food, indie music and true crime podcasts. She is survived by her husband Gregory Pennenga and her dog Rufus.

Cat was involved with SWEL from Day 1, providing a photobooth for the Wedding Professionals White Party in 2016. She was one of the most involved members, providing event photography and photobooths countless times over the past 7 years. When SWEL became a membership, Cat was one of the first to sign up. And when the Ambassador Committee was formed in 2022, she jumped right in sharing ideas, giving suggestions and helping in any way possible. Cat attended as many events as she could and soaked up the education. Even at the top of her game, she was always eager to learn and grow.

Cat, born Catherine Horton, was a Sarasota native and had an intrinsic connection locally. Her grandparents, Mabel and Freeman Horton, settled on what is now known as Emerson Preserve in Palmetto. After that, they purchased Powel Crosley Estate and made it their home from 1948 into the 1980s before it was eventually purchased by the State of Florida. It was fitting that Cat and Greg returned to this spot where she played as a child for their wedding in 2009 and then on many other occasions to shoot weddings and events.

Cat's cancer diagnosis came quickly, and although her fight was short, she fought hard. She stayed as positive as possible through it all. The outpouring of love and support over the last few weeks was intense in the best way possible. “I have never in my life felt so loved or lifted up and that is exactly what I need to keep this fight going," she wrote on GoFundMe.
